1 Al-Owairan vs Belgium

Starting deep in his own half, ‘The Pele of the Desert’ dashes up field like a man possessed, abandons five defenders with his fleet feet and pumps the ball past goalkeeper of the tournament Michel Preud’homme.

2 Gheorghe Hagi vs Colombia

From a harmless position on the left wing, ‘The Maradona of the Carpathians’ looks up to deliver
a cross, but spots the keeper slightly out of position and chips neatly over his head into the top corner.

3 Klinsmann vs South Korea

Vintage Jurgen. He cleverly ghosts away from his marker into the heart of the box, and with his back to goal, flicks the ball up in the air with his right foot, swivels and spanks it home with his jackhammer left.

4 Maradona vs Greece

Diego’s sole strike of the tournament was worthy of the name. Basualdo and Batistuta ping-pong the ball through a gaggle of Greeks before their captain slams it home. The celebration: brilliant, mental, Maradona in a nutshell.

5 Andersson vs Brazil

He was six foot four, but while Andersson could execute
a useful towering header, he was also living embodiment of the phrase: “good touch for a big lad.” A strike from a seemingly impossible position.

6 Stoichkov vs Mexico

Team-mate Ivaylo Yordanov wins it and spots Stoichkov. The forward takes the pass, has a touch, then smashes it in left-footed at the near post.

7 Branco vs Holland

Before Roberto Carlos, another Brazilian left-back was notorious for unleashing Scud missiles from set plays. Branco drills a swerving effort past wall, keeper and team-mates into the bottom left-hand corner.

8 Brolin vs Romania

Best-known in England for waddling around the Leeds midfield in the late-’90s, it’s easy to forget that at his peak Brolin was one of the best players
in the world. This inventive team free-kick proves the point.

9 Finidi George vs Greece

Nigeria’s gifted number seven guides a pinpoint chip over Antonis Minou. As if he hadn’t embarrassed Greece enough, barmy Finidi then celebrates by crawling on all fours like a delighted puppy.

10 Goikoetxea vs Germany

The unpronounceable Spanish midfielder had tongues twisting across the globe thanks to this deeply cheeky effort. Out on the right wing he swerves in an incredible cross-cum-shot that nestles in the far left-hand corner.
