Robins fan Nick Judd salivates over the managerial contenders as Swindon prepare to name their new man...
Swindon Town should have a new manager by Saturday for the trip to Crewe Alexandra, if our chairman’s deadline is to be believed.
Good job too, we’ve won just four points from five games.
Yet, if in taking his time Andrew Fitton has exhausted every angle and ends up making the right appointment, then good on him. I want him to speak to everyone out of work, everyone in work and even those in work and beyond our reach if it means we get the best man for the job.
Fitton: "Can you tell who it is yet..."
He should at least be applauded for being able to keep us guessing, for no-one still has any clue as to who his candidates are.
The last four weeks have seen more than 50 names linked to the vacancy. Of those, there’s not one we can all agree on, surprising given all Town fans are united in wanting a manager who can win games with attractive football.
Twice the bookies have stopped taking bets, firstly on former Carlisle boss John Ward and, more recently, Forest boss and former Town legend Colin Calderwood, but even these have proved to be false dawns.
Good PR on Victor Chandler’s behalf, though, their PR man deserves a medal…
The Calderwood link grew stronger when it was revealed his position was growing more uncertain at the City Ground. That, and Fitton admitted some of the managers he was talking to were still in employment.
Even Forest fans were suggesting a deal with Town had been put in place, with Allardyce assuming the Forest reigns. Then Calderwood went and bagged four points in his next two games.
Roy Keane was sacked, prompting a possible chain of events that, some suggested, would see Allardyce go to Sunderland, Keane to Forest and Calderwood to Town!

Today, several fans are reporting the tabloid rumour involving former Walsall boss Richard Money as fact. “Put you money on Money,” says one fan. If I’d put my money down every time I was told to, I’d be bankrupt!
The truth is no-one knows a thing. Sensibility would suggest the shortlist involves Colin Calderwood and Martin Ling, partly because they fit Fitton’s criteria, and partly because Fitton’s been talking to Glenn Hoddle, and both were mainstays of Hod-the-God’s promotion-winning team in 1993.
Richard Money also makes sense, while Fitton tells us there’s another name no-one has mentioned.
Confused? You should be, but hopefully in the next five days we’ll get our man. I’ll take Calderwood or Money, but I’d love Steve Cotterill or Wycombe’s Peter Taylor.
