Steven Gerrard: Modern-day Houdini or Al Capone?

Thursday 18 March 2010 15:00

Everyone is saying the bookies are having all the luck this week at Cheltenham but all I can say is that it’s only half-time, there’s two more days to go and some big horses still to run. So plenty to play for...

I’ve spotted the usual fair share of footballers at Cheltenham, in varying choices of attire; Titus Bramble was seen in a flat cap that wouldn’t look out of place in the stables and Notts County’s Lee Hughes was seen sporting a very “League Two” tartan suit. Nice.

High rollers Lescott & Barry rock up this week

One player not seen at Cheltenham yet but getting all the luck in the world is Steven Gerrard. If he was to turn up at Prestbury Park he could turn the tables for the punters because no matter how hard he tries the authorities just can’t pin anything on him.

So far this year he’s dodged the police, the referees, the FA and seemingly the critics. You might say it's not just the odd Cheltenham runner wearing blinkers.

It’s a huge game this Sunday when Liverpool play at Manchester United so we’re pricing up what will ‘Stevie’ do next:

13/8      Be awarded a penalty for a dive
2/1       Two-footed tackle
11/4      Elbowing a player
15/2      Offensive hand-gesture towards a ref or linesman
12/1      Meeting with Chelsea or Man City officials
14/1      Criticising Benitez
33/1      Pushing a ref or linesman

If Liverpool fail to make fourth, will the captain court a move out of Anfield? Would it be such a bad thing for Liverpool if he did? There’s only two clubs in England that daft enough to pay massive money for him so maybe he’ll cut loose and be a lucky bandito in Madrid.

Whatever he does he’ll get away with it – which leads you to think, imagine if he did the lottery...
