What are you talking about? Serie A is our equivalent of the Premiership in England. It's the top football league in the country. It has the same number of teams and therefore number of matches too. Just because it isn't called the Premier League, doesn't mean it isn't the top league in the country or one of the better ones in Europe.
Serie A is not the Italian equivalent of the Premiership, it's the Italian equivalent of the old First Division, it still associates itself with the lower Serie B and C leagues, there is no independant hierarchy, no independant sponsership or tv deals. Serie A breaking and calling itself something along the lines of 'Lega Prima' would create that individuality and make you the Italian Premiership, and not just the First Division, associated with 3 others.
Another uninformed comment. The only way the Premiership isn't associated with the leagues below is in TV, sponsorship and the people who run the league. Other than that, it is the top football league in England, the same way as Serie A is the top football league in Italy. Just because we haven't rebranded and milked the money that comes with top level football doesn't put the Premiership any higher.
The Premiership still accepts promotion from the leagues below. In the same way Serie A accepts promotion from Serie B, Prima Divisione e.t.c. Serie A also has independent sponsorship, from TIM. In the same way the Premiership has independent sponsorship from Barclays.
There are also independent TV deals in Italy. The difference is each club in Serie A can sell their own TV rights - the Serie A broadcasting rights do not come as a whole package.
But to be honest with you, I'm glad Serie A hasn't completely followed the Premiership in terms of off-the-pitch running.
