Beckham 8/1 to score free-kick

442 Staff - Monday 15 February 2010, 17:04

AC Milan midfielder David Beckham can be backed at 4/1 to score against former employers Manchester United at the San Siro on Tuesday in the last 16 of the Champions League.

The bookies make the former Old Trafford star 8/1 to net with a free-kick, or alternatively 5/2 to get a yellow card, 33/1 to be sent off and 8/1 to receive a card for a challenge on England team-mate Wayne Rooney.

The 34-year-old faces Sir Alex Ferguson's side for the first time since leaving the Red Devils for Real Madrid in 2003.

And although the ex-England captain is not guaranteed to start the match, bookmakers have gone into overdrive with markets for the LA Galaxy man.

"The prospect of Beckham locking horns with Fergie has prompted a surge in interest. He remains one of the biggest draws in world sport and that translates itself into huge betting turnover," said David Williams of Ladbrokes.

United are the narrow 6/4 favourites for the clash in Milan, with the hosts at 8/5.

"We're laying plenty of United but would much prefer to be laying Milan. We'll be cheering on the Italians at this rate," he added.
