Portsmouth have made an official complaint to the Football Association following insulting chants directed at Sol Campbell by Tottenham supporters fans at Fratton Park last weekend.

Campbell, who opted to leave Spurs on a free transfer to join bitter rivals Arsenal in 2001, was the subject of abusive chanting from the away enclosure for the majority of Pompey's 2-0 Premier League victory.

Portsmouth fans initially made their own complaints to Hampshire Police, who said they were unable to act due to the large number of Tottenham fans concerned.

However, Portsmouth have now issued a statement saying: "Both Sol and the club feel no player should be subjected to personal abuse of this nature and that it has no place in football.

"The club will be urging the FA to look into this as a matter of urgency and will co-operate fully in any investigations which take place, either by the FA or by Hampshire Police."

Pompey boss Harry Redknapp had earlier commented: "That's got no place in football. It's got no place in life, it's a disgrace. People chant filth, it's nothing to do with football.

"Some of the stuff that goes on is completely out of order. We're talking about awful abuse, some of this stuff is racist. It's wrong and has no place in football.

"How do you do that in front of your kids? What kind of a nutter must you be? What kind of human being must you be when you take your little kids to football and shout filth? It can't be right.

"Of course (Sol) is upset about it and we are all disappointed about what's happened to him but he'll be fine. He'll move on and get on with his football. He's been terrific for us."
