Liverpool defender Martin Skrtel is expected to be out of action for several months after the Anfield club confirmed the Slovakian suffered cruciate knee ligament damage at Manchester City on Sunday.

Skrtel fell awkwardly when chasing down a long-ball in the Reds' 3-2 win at Eastlands and was stretchered off the pitch after receiving lengthy treatment.

Manager, Rafa Benitez admitted after the match that he feared the defender would be out long-term.

And following a scan, club spokesman Ian Cotton has told Liverpool's official website: "Martin underwent a scan this morning which showed damage to the posterior cruciate ligament in his right knee.

"He will see a specialist tomorrow to assess the extent of the injury and will then have an accurate idea of the timescales involved before he is back playing again."
