Ronaldo survives smash en route to training

442 Staff - Thursday 08 January 2009, 14:00

Manchester United forward Cristiano Ronaldo has miraculously escaped unharmed after being involved in a horrific car smash near Manchester airport early on Thursday morning.

The Portuguese ace was on his way to United’s Carrington training ground to prepare for this weekend’s crucial clash with Chelsea when his Ferrari collided with a barrier on the A538 Wilsmlow Road at about 10.20am as he drove through a tunnel beneath the runways.

Despite writing off the sports car, Ronaldo avoided injury. Greater Manchester Police (GMP) confirmed that the winger gave a negative breath test and said that his team-mate Edwin van der Sar, who was following in a Bentley, was not involved in the crash.

"He (Ronaldo) was involved in an incident this morning. No other cars were involved," said a Manchester United spokesman. "He's fine and is training as normal with the team this morning."
