North London duo Arsenal and Spurs are said to be ready to battle for the signature of Newcastle’s highly rated French centre back Sebastien Bassong.

With Newcastle owner Mike Ashley desperate to sell both the club and the playing staff in order to cut his losses, Bassong could prove to be one of his more saleable assets.

Ashley has reportedly put all of his players up for sale and north east paper The Journal, who voted Bassong their player of the season, expect the sought after Frenchman to be first out of the door.

It is believed Newcastle, who were relegated from the Premier League last month after a nightmarish campaign that saw them work their way through no fewer than four managers, have put a price tag of £12 million on Bassong, who showed authority beyond his tender years during a disastrous campaign for the club.

Whether Newcastle will receive any bids in that region remains to be seen, however, there is no doubt that Newcastle can expect make a huge profit on the £500,000 they paid Metz a year ago.

Any club wishing to sign Bassong may move quickly for the Frenchman, while Newcastle’s future is uncertain, as any future new owners could provide a cash injection that would make it easier for Newcastle to hold on to their top names.
