Arsenal came close to signing Enyeama

442 Staff - Tuesday 16 June 2009, 13:37

Arsenal came close to sealing the signature of Hapoel Tel Aviv goalkeeper Vincent Enyeama, according to the player's agent.

The 26-year-old stopper has made 47 league appearances for the Israeli outfit since joining in 2007, scoring four times from the penalty spot.

And the Nigerian international - who has 43 caps for his country - is believed to have impressed Gunners' boss Arsene Wenger during the Super Eagles' recent encounter with France.

However, Enyeama's agent Tony Martich has revealed that the glove-man's move to the Emirates Stadium broke down after Hapoel demanded €2 million for his services, with Wenger instead opting to extend the contract of Polish stopper Lukasz Fabianski.

"Vincent was very close to sealing a move to Arsenal, he had already agreed personal terms but Hapoel demanded €2 million and Arsenal pulled out," Martich told the Israeli media.

"Israeli clubs need to understand that the Ligat Ha'Al doesn't mean much to the biggest clubs in the world."
