Sunderland seeking Zokora signing

442 Staff - Tuesday 23 June 2009, 17:55

Sunderland boss Steve Bruce is believed to be leading the race to sign Ivorian midfielder Didier Zokora this summer.

However, Tottenham Hotspur's valuation of £10 million for the former Saint-Etienne man could scupper a deal between the two clubs.

After attempting to land the defensive midfielder as a replacement for Wilson Palacios at Wigan, the Ivory Coast international - who has won 75 caps - could become Bruce's first signing at the Stadium of Light after the player's representative confirmed his interest in a move to Wearside.

And if the clubs can reach an agreement, Zokora - who has made 87 league appearances for the White Hart Lane outfit since arriving in 2006 - will be the fifth Tottenham player to sign for the Black Cats in the past 12 months, following Pascal Chimbonda, Steed Malbranque, Teemu Tainio and Andy Reid.

"He would do very well at Sunderland, they're an absolutely massive club," Zokora's representative Rachel Anderson told the Sunderland Echo.

"There are not many clubs Didier would leave Tottenham for but I think Sunderland are one.

"If the terms of the deal are decent, but also if the move is an adventure, then he would be interested."
