Sunderland snubbed over Chamakh

442 Staff - Monday 06 July 2009, 13:20

Bordeaux president Jean-Louis Triaud has rubbished reports linking sought-after striker Marouane Chamakh with Sunderland.

Recent speculation has named the Black Cats as potential suitors for the Moroccan front-man, who netted 13 times in Ligue 1 last season to help secure a first league crown in 10 years for les Girondins.

Both Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have also been tipped to land the forward - who has scored 15 goals for his country - in the past, with Gunners' boss Arsene Wenger suggesting they would only make a move for the player should Emmanuel Adebayor depart the Emirates Stadium.

However, any hopes Sunderland had of landing the striker now appear to be dead and buried, after Bordeaux chief Triaud laughed off links with the North East outfit, saying Chamakh is destined for far bigger and better things.

"We never received any offers for Marouane Chamakh and what is he going to do in Sunderland?" Triaud told AFP.

"I don't want to insult Sunderland, but I don't even know where they finished last season.

"You have heard him say he will only sign for a big English club."
