Redknapp: I am in hunt for Huntelaar

442 Staff - Thursday 23 July 2009, 12:29

Tottenham Hotspur have confirmed they are interested in signing Real Madrid striker Klaas-Jan Huntelaar.

The front-man only joined the Spanish giants from Ajax in January, netting eight league goals in 20 appearances.

However, the Dutchman's future at the Bernabeu - along with several of his fellow countrymen - has been cast into doubt following the return of former president Florentino Perez, who has already splashed more than €200 million on stellar signings including Kaka, Cristiano Ronaldo and Karim Benzema.

Huntelaar has been linked with a move to several Premier League clubs, including Manchester United, Arsenal and Spurs, with the Gunners believed to be eyeing either Huntelaar or Bordeaux forward Marouane Chamakh as a replacement for new Manchester City signing Emmanuel Adebayor.

Stuttgart had already had a €20 million bid for the Holland international, who has scored 13 times in 23 caps, accepted.

However, the striker, who has totalled 143 league goals in 203 club appearances to date, has now snubbed a move to Germany in the hope of completing a move to either England or Italy.

And Tottenham boss Harry Redknapp has revealed that Huntelaar is his No.1 target this summer.

"The lad is a very good goalscorer and I'm still interested in him," he said.

"I know of Stuttgart's involvement but I'm hoping we will still be able to do something.

"There's a lot of talk about who I may or may not be after but Huntelaar is the one I like."
