Sheringham: Liverpool to lift Premier League

442 Staff - Tuesday 11 August 2009, 14:43

Former Manchester United striker Teddy Sheringham has tipped the Red Devils' arch rivals Liverpool to finally win their first Premier League title in 2009/10.

Sir Alex Ferguson's side won a third consecutive league crown last season, drawing level with the Anfield outfit on 18 English league titles apiece.

However, Sheringham - who made 104 league appearances for United from 1997-2001, scoring in both the FA Cup and Champions League finals in 1999 - believes his former employers will be denied a fourth consecutive success.

“I'm going for Liverpool to win the title,” he told ZOO magazine.

“They looked so good at the end of last season and will be the team to beat.

“United fans won't like me saying it, but it'll be their year.”

And the ex-England international says the Merseysiders will be led to league glory this season by the goals of Spanish talisman Fernando Torres, who Sheringham says will bounce back from his injury problems last term to pick up the Golden Boot in 2009/10.

“I also think they'll have the Prem's top scorer in Fernando Torres,” he said.

“Benitez will play him in all the Premier League games because the title is so important to the Reds, whereas other clubs may rotate more.”
