Bolt behind United bouncebackability

442 Staff - Thursday 03 September 2009, 16:40

Olympic gold medal winner and world record holder Usain Bolt has revealed his telephone conversation with Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson was the inspiration behind the Red Devils' 5-0 tonking of Wigan Athletic.

The Premier League champions have made what has become a customary slow start to the campaign, scraping past Birmingham City 1-0 on the opening weekend, before losing by the same score-line at newcomers Burnley.

However, a second-half goal-feast at the DW Stadium, followed by a 2-1 victory against Arsenal at Old Trafford have rejuvenated the side, who now sit third in the table, three points behind early pace-setters Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur.

And Bolt, who won gold in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m relay at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, and broken the 100m world record on three occasions, says his motivational words to Ferguson helped spring the side into life.

"I made a call to Alex telling him that losing is not an option because I’ve been winning and he just talked to the guys to let them know to get it done," he told BBC Sport.

"First of all I would like to say thank you guys for winning."
