Davenport charged with assault

Reuters - Wednesday 28 October 2009, 16:14

LONDON - Police have charged West Ham United defender Calum Davenport with assaulting a woman shortly before he was stabbed at his mother's home in August, they said said on Wednesday.

Davenport, 26, a former England Under-21 international, was stabbed in both legs during the attack at the house in Bedford, 50 miles north of London, and had emergency surgery for his injuries.

"Professional footballer Calum Davenport has been charged with assault causing actual bodily harm on a woman following an incident in Bedford on August 22," Bedfordshire police said in a statement.

The Premier League player has been released on police bail and is due to appear at Bedford Magistrates Court on November 10.

Police said the alleged incident had occurred on the same night Davenport was injured but gave no further details.

A 25-year-old man has already been charged with causing Davenport grievous bodily harm with intent and also causing actual bodily harm to the footballer's 49-year-old mother.

Davenport began very light rehabilitation work, including some cycling and swimming, at West Ham's training ground earlier this month following his release from hospital.

"Calum's doing well..." West Ham manager Gianfranco Zola was quoted as saying on the club website.

"He has to be assessed again in about a month's time but it was very pleasing for everyone to see him around."

"It is too early to say (about his recovery) but the fact he can do such sports is encouraging."
