England to play Egypt at Wembley

Reuters - Monday 21 December 2009, 14:05

LONDON - England will play Egypt in a friendly international at Wembley on March 3 as they continue their preparations for next year's World Cup finals, the Football Association said on Monday.

The match, the first between the nations at Wembley, will give Fabio Capello's side the chance to test themselves against north African opponents who play a similar style to Algeria who England will face in the group stage in South Africa.

Algeria beat Egypt in a tense play-off last month.

England have not played Egypt for 19 years since a Mark Wright goal gave them a 1-0 victory at the 1990 World Cup finals.

The only other meeting between the sides was a 4-0 win for England in a friendly in Cairo in 1986.
