Darren Bent quits Twitter

The 26-year-old England international had amassed more than 40,000 followers, who received regular updates regarding his day-to-day activities.

His last 'tweet' - sent on Thursday evening - simply "Keep the faith."

The former Charlton and Tottenham Hotspur goal-getter had attracted controversy using the website, after slamming Spurs' supremo Daniel Levy last summer as he sought a transfer away from White Hart Lane.

The striker later revealed on the site that he had been pulled off a plane heading to China for Tottenham's pre-season tour at the last minute, in order for him to travel to Sunderland and complete his move to the Stadium of Light.

Bent recently took part in a charity event with Sunderland boxer Tony Jeffries to gain followers the fastest, with the Olympic bronze medallist paying £1,000 to The Tracy Crawford Foundation for finishing second best.

The striker had previously challenged Soccer AM presenter Max Rushden and Sky Sports reporter Andy Burton to reach 10,000 followers first - with losers Bent and Rushden donating a day's wages to the Lily Foundation.

An in-depth interview with Darren Bent - in which he talks about Twitter, his greatest fears, World Cup hopes and the beach ball - features in the March issue of FourFourTwo magazine - in shops February 17.
