Catania keen on Appiah

442 Staff - Tuesday 15 September 2009, 18:49

General manager of Serie A outfit Catania, Pietro Lo Monaco says the club would be interested in signing Ghanaian midfielder Stephen Appiah if he is fit enough.

The 28-year-old central midfielder has been a free agent since leaving Fenerbahce last year having endured a lengthy spell on the sidelines with a serious knee injury.

Appiah spent time on trial at Tottenham Hotspur last January, with both Arsenal and West Ham also linked with moves for the player.

However, nothing ever materialised.

And despite also having trained with Russian champions Rubin Kazan, the former Juventus powerhouse then discovered that he could not sign for a new side until he paid Fenerbahce $2.3 million, after FIFA found in the Turks' favour following a complaint that Appiah walked out on them while still under contract.

Appiah has recently been training with former club Brescia's youth team in a bid to improve his fitness.

And Catania general manager Lo Monaco has revealed that he would be interested in acquiring the Ghanaian's services, believing that he could succeed in Serie A again.

"Appiah? Of course, if he's [physically] good we would buy him at once," he told Itasportpress.

"He would not only be a good signing for Catania, but I think he could still play for any of the other 19 teams in Serie A.

"I don't know how he is now and if he has overcome his physical problems but I can say with certainty that Appiah is a great talent."
