Milan mulling Puyol move

442 Staff - Monday 12 October 2009, 13:01

AC Milan are keen on recruiting Barcelona defender Carles Puyol, according to reports in Italy.

The 31-year-old has spent his entire career with the Camp Nou club, making more than 300 la Liga appearances for the Catalans since graduating from the club's B team in 1999.

The Euro 2008 winner, who has 78 caps for his country, has yet to agree a new deal with the European champions, with speculation rife in Spain that Puyol will seek a a fresh challenge next summer as he edges closer to retirement.

Premier League duo Arsenal and Manchester City have already been linked with a move for the experienced stopper, with Arsene Wenger believed to see Puyol as the ideal partner for Thomas Vermaelen at the heart of the Gunners' defence.

While City supremo Mark Hughes is thought to be keen to add the enforcer to his ever-growing list of high-profile signings as the Blues bid to gatecrash the 'Big Four' at the top of the Premier League table.

However, according to 24oredisport.com, the pair could now face competition for his services from San Siro giants AC Milan.

New coach Leonardo has endured a disastrous start to his tenure in charge of the Rossoneri, who have won just two of their opening seven league encounters and are already shortlisting potential new faces to help save their stuttering campaign.
