Feyenoord ask fans to stay away from Nancy

ROTTERDAM - Feyenoord have
asked their fans not to travel to France's AS Nancy for their
UEFA Cup match later this month because of fears of a repeat of
the crowd violence that marred the tie between the two clubs in
2006.
The Dutch club said they would not sell tickets to their
fans for the tie on October 23 after the twice UEFA Cup winners
were paired with Nancy in the group stage again.
The Rotterdam side were expelled from the 2006/07
competition by UEFA following crowd trouble involving their fans
in Nancy in November 2006.
Feyenoord qualified from the group stage but were kicked out
by UEFA, allowing Tottenham Hotspur a bye in the first knockout
round.
"We don't expect the people who caused the problems in 2006
to travel to France but it is logical that the French
authorities are keen to prevent any problems," financial
director Onno Jacobs was quoted as saying on the Feyenoord
website on Wednesday.
"Every minor incident could lead to exaggerated reactions,
with possible serious consequences and we cannot take that
risk."
"We think that our fans will understand this decision as the
future of Feyenoord is more important than this single match."
