Zico named new Olympiakos coach

Reuters - Wednesday 16 September 2009, 18:57

ATHENS - Former Brazil international Zico has been appointed as the new coach of Greek champions Olympiakos on a two-year contract just a few hours before their opening Champions League match on Wednesday.

"Olympiakos announces its agreement, for two years, with the Brazilian coach Zico," a statement on the Olympiakos website said.

Olympiakos host Dutch club AZ Alkmaar in Group H on Wednesday.

Zico, 56, was relieved of his duties as coach of CSKA Moscow six days ago. He replaces Temuri Ketsbaia whose departure from Olympiakos was announced on Tuesday.

The former Brazilian midfielder, who appeared in three World Cups, coached Japan in the 2006 tournament and took Turkish club Fenerbahce to the quarter-finals of the Champions League in 2007-8.

He took over as head coach of CSKA Moscow in January this year but was fired on September 10.
