Metsu takes over as Qatar coach

DOHA - Frenchman Bruno Metsu has been
named as the new coach of Qatar's national side after walking
out on the United Arab Emirates.
The 54-year-old quit as Emirates coach this week following
successive home defeats in the final round of Asian qualifying
for the 2010 World Cup.
Metsu, who led Senegal to the 2002 World Cup quarter-finals
and won the 2007 Gulf Nations Cup with the UAE, has signed a
two-year contract with Qatar, the Asian Football Confederation
said on Friday.
Qatar top their World Cup qualifying group but terminated
coach Jorge Fossati's contract after the Uruguayan underwent
stomach surgery.
The tiny Gulf state could, however, be booted out of the
competition if the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS)
overrules FIFA's decision not to punish them for fielding an
ineligible player in an earlier round.
