BUENOS AIRES - A Peruvian derby ended in
chaos at the weekend when Sport Boys striker Flavio Maestri
attempted to attack the linesman after being sent off for
elbowing against Sporting Cristal.
America, whose players threatened to go on strike last week,
beat Millonarios 1-0 on another low-scoring weekend in Colombia.
PERU
Sport Boys striker Maestri lost his temper after being
dismissed for elbowing in the last minute of Sport Boys' 2-1
home defeat to Cristal.
An enraged Maestri attempted to attack the official and had
to be restrained by team mates and Cristal coach Juan Carlos
Oblitas.
The incident sparked a brawl on the running track around the
pitch in which police also became involved. After five minutes'
fighting, referee Percy Rojas blew for time.
Amilton Prado and Daniel Sanchez scored for Cristal, who had
Wenceslau Fernandez dismissed for two yellow cards, while Carlos
Moura replied for Sport Boys, who are mired in financial
problems and appear set for relegation.
Sport Boys players claimed they have not been paid for four
months.
Deportivo San Martin lead the championship's second stage
after a 1-0 win over Jose Galvez. Alianza Lima's run of five
straight wins ended when they lost 2-1 at home to Atletico
Minero.
COLOMBIA
America ended a difficult week by beating Millonarios 1-0
with a first-half goal from Adrian Ramos.
The game ended in controversy after Millonarios had Mauricio
Casierra sent off in the second half and a goal disallowed for
offside in the 75th minute.
America's players threatened last week not to travel to
Brazil for Wednesday's Copa Sudamericana tie against Botafogo in
a row over unpaid bonuses. They backed down after a meeting with
directors.
Deportes Tolima stayed top of the Finalizacion table with a
2-1 win away to Pasto, although the leadership is symbolic only
as the top eight teams qualify for the semi-final group stage.
The championship's low scoring continued with only 12 goals
in the 10 games played at the weekend. The average for the
competition is a paltry 2.1 per game.
CHILE
Champions Everton came from behind to beat Colo Colo 3-1 in
a repeat of the Apertura championship final.
Lucas Barrios missed a sixth minute penalty for Colo Colo,
who had striker Rodolfo Moya sent off three minutes before
halftime but then went ahead with a Luis Pedro Figueroa goal
after the break.
Everton replied with two goals from striker Ezequiel
Miralles before Fernando Saavedra added a third in stoppage
time.
Union Espanola gave new coach Luis Hernan Carvallo a winning
start by beating Universidad de Concepcion 3-1 while Univerisdad
de Chile beat Deportes Antofagasta 3-0 despite a second-half
injury to striker Marcelo Salas.
URUGUAY
Danubio lost their 100 percent record when they were beaten
3-2 at Tacuarembo in their fifth game.
Diego Martinones scored twice for the hosts before Aldo Diaz
grabbed the winner in the 75th minute while Damian Malrechaufe
and Sergio Leal replied.
Danubio still lead the 2008/09 championship's first stage
but only on goal difference from Nacional who won 3-2 at
promoted Cerro Lago.
PARAGUAY
The weekend was marred when a linesman was struck by a
plastic bottle thrown from the crowd during 3 de Febrero's 1-1
draw at home to Cerro Porteno.
The match was halted for five minutes before the referee
decided to play on.
12 de Octubre went top of the Clausura championship with a
4-1 win over previously unbeaten Guarani.
Diego Martinez, Francisco Esteche and Guillermo Beltran
scored as 12 raced to a 3-0 halftime lead. Beltran was on target
again in the second half while Cesar Caceres replied for
Guarani.
VENEZUELA
Leaders Deportivo Italia came from 2-0 down to draw 2-2 at
Carabobo and remain unbeaten after seven games in the first
stage of the 2008/09 championship.
Jaime Salazar and Rodrigo Prieto scored in a five-minute
spell before halftime for the hosts before Cristian Casseres
pulled one back with a penalty and Mauro Conocciari equalised in
the 79th minute.
Deportivo have 17 points from seven games, one ahead of
Zulia who beat Llaneros 3-0.
Champions Deportivo Tachira thumped Minerven 4-0 with two
goals each from Anderson Arias and Guillermo Beraza.
