BUENOS AIRES - Two Estudiantes de La Plata supporters were shot and wounded in clashes between rival factions of the team's hardcore fans on Monday, police sources said.

Police said three suspects had been arrested.

A 29-year-old man was shot in a foot and a 30-year-old in the stomach. They were taken to a hospital in La Plata.

The incident occurred as fans were about to board buses in La Plata to travel the 60 kilometres to Racing Club in the Buenos Aires suburb of Avellaneda for a first division match which Estudiantes lost 1-0.

Former Estudiantes forward Pablo Luguercio scored the only goal with a shot from the edge of the box in the fourth minute.

Estudiantes striker Mauro Boselli had a second-half equaliser disallowed for handball.

It was a second successive match in which Estudiantes, who had been among the front-runners for the Apertura championship title, conceded an early goal and lost after last week's 3-0 defeat at Rosario Central.

They are six points off the pace having played one more match and with five to go.

As South American champions, Estudiantes will take part in next month's Club World Cup in Abu Dhabi.
