BUENOS AIRES - Three midfielders were
sent off and two forwards scored hat-tricks as Independiente
Medellin crushed Envigado 7-1 in the Colombian championship at
the weekend.
Penarol, one of Uruguay's "Big Two" clubs, extended their
record start to the Clausura with a tenth consecutive victory.
COLOMBIA
Real Cartagena's unbeaten run came to an end after 10
matches in the Apertura when they lost 3-0 at Deportivo Pereira.
Their lead was cut to three points by champions
Independiente Medellin, who crushed eight-man Envigado 7-1 with
hat-tricks from Paraguayan Mario Gimenez, who scored his three
goals in the space of 18 minutes, and Luis Arias.
Former Colombia international Gerardo Bedoya and Neider
Morantes were sent off just past the hour and their fellow
midfielder Dorlan Pabon in the 76th as Envigado's frustration
boiled over.
Millonarios ended a run of 10 Bogota derbies against
Independiente Santa Fe with a 2-1 win, a week after the
resignation of coach Luis Augusto Garcia due to poor results.
URUGUAY
A last-minute own goal by Defensor Sporting midfielder Pablo
Gaglianone at a corner gave Penarol a 3-2 win to increase their
record start to the Clausura to a 10th consecutive victory and
open a 10-point lead.
Gaglianone gave Defensor the lead in the 42nd-minute when he
netted the rebound after his penalty was saved. Penarol striker
Antonio Pacheco equalised from the spot in the 58th.
Forward Ignacio Risso put Defensor ahead again in the 73rd
only for midfielder Gaston Ramirez to head an equaliser with 10
minutes remaining.
Fenix remain in second place by one point from champions
Nacional and Cerro after being held 1-1 at Tacuarembo.
Cerro, who are enjoying a good run in the Libertadores Cup,
beat Nacional 3-1 to join them in third place.
CHILE
Union Espanola's Ecuadorean defender Giovanny Espinoza
accused Nublense's Argentine defender Matias Manrique of racist
insults after his team's 3-1 defeat. The incident is being
investigated and Manrique faces a possible sanction.
Universidad de Chile, who recovered from a two-goal deficit
to beat Union San Felipe 4-2, lead the standings with 19 points.
Colo Colo climbed to second on 16 points with a 2-0 win over
lowly San Luis in the port city of Valparaiso with two goals
from Chile striker Esteban Paredes.
PERU
San Martin and Cesar Vallejo continue to lead the
championship by two points from Sporting Cristal after wins at
the weekend.
Sporting recovered from their humiliating 4-0 rout at home
by San Martin last weekend with a 2-1 win away to Sports Boys,
their Uruguayan striker Miguel Ximenez heading the 88th-minute
winner.
Alianza Lima, whose form has been erratic since their
brilliant 4-1 rout of South American champions Estudiantes de La
Plata in the Libertadores Cup six weeks ago, lost 4-2 to Melgar
in the southern city of Arequipa and are nine points off the
pace.
PARAGUAY
Striker Roberto Gamarra scored a hat-trick as Libertad beat
10-man Sol de America 4-1. Defender Adalberto Goiris was sent
off in the 45th minute.
Leaders Cerro scored a last-gasp equaliser for a 1-1 draw
with Rubio Nu, who had taken the lead through 38-year-old former
Paraguay midfielder Roberto Acuna.
ECUADOR
Barcelona beat Manta 2-1 with their Paraguayan striker Juan
Samudio scoring a late, decisive goal for the second successive
match. Samudio scored the winner in the 83rd minute, having also
hit the net in the 81st in last weekend's 1-0 win against
Espoli.
Barcelona lead with 19 points after eight games, one ahead
of LDU Quito, who beat El Nacional 1-0 with Uruguayan Juan
Manuel Salgueiro scoring.
BOLIVIA
Bolivar came back from two goals down to draw 2-2 with The
Strongest in their La Paz derby. Unbeaten Bolivar are top of
Group Two after five matches in the Apertura.
Group One is led jointly by San Jose and Guabira with seven
points apiece. The Strongest have six points.
VENEZUELA
With Caracas FC not in action, Zamora went a point clear at
the top of the Clausura with a 1-1 draw at home to AC Mineros.
Caracas and champions Deportivo Tachira, who are a point
further back, both have two games in hand due to Libertadores
Cup commitments.
