JOHANNESBURG - A freelance German journalist covering the Confederations Cup tournament in South Africa died on Monday after a car accident.

Wolfgang Jost, 57, a former sports editor of the Berlin newspaper Der Tagesspiegel was injured in the crash last Thursday while going to a match in Bloemfontein.

He never recovered consciousness after the accident, which happened on the way to the Spain v United States semi-final.

Three other journalists were also injured in the crash but survived and have since returned home.

A period of silence was held by journalists before a news conference held on Monday by FIFA president Sepp Blatter.
