Bari

Bari

The Northern Europeans, including hundreds of Brits, currently buying up second homes around Bari are not the first to claim land in Puglia, the 400km-long 'heel' of Italy. The Greeks, Normans, Spanish, Saracens and Romans have also planted flags here, often with far less of a welcome from the locals - leading to the building of some formidable castles.

Bari itself, though a busy ferry port and recently boosted by its airport receiving cheap flights, has no delusions about being a tourist trap, despite the obvious attractions of its walkably compact old city, a headland labyrinth designed to confuse invaders - it works; even with a map you're sure to get lost.

Pity then that the new city, while typifying Southern Italy's determination to grow economically, is as soulless and unnerving as the white elephant of a stadium the local team play in.
