New York
The biggest tip when travelling to New York (in fact, to the US in general): don’t forget to tip! Unless a service charge is included in the bill, tip between 15 and 20 percent in restaurants, ditto for taxi journeys.
For the latter, make sure you travel in the instantly-recognisable, yellow, licensed ‘Medallion’ cabs, to ensure you don’t get ripped off.
Once in Manhattan, the subway is cheaper – and quicker – and is open 24 hours a day. It costs $2 for a single ride but if you’re planning on staying for a while, you’d be better off buying in bulk in the form of a multi-trip MetroCard. A $10 card gets you six journeys for the price of five, a $20 card gets you 12 journeys for the price of 10 and so on. Special one-day and seven-day passes can also be bought.
