Jurgen Klopp's side looked to have turned a corner after three consecutive wins in all competitions, a run which began with a 7-1 thumping of Rangers in this competition. But Liverpool took another step back at the weekend, going down 1-0 to Nottingham Forest - a team that had won just once this season - at the City Ground.

Jurgen Klopp hinted at fatigue after the match and Liverpool's schedule has certainly been hectic as the World Cup looms, but it was another flat and limp showing from his side. Having already conceded the Premier League title, Klopp must now ensure his side do not fall too far behind in the race for the top four.

Liverpool have at least achieved a degree of consistency in the Champions League, at least since that 4-1 thrashing by Napoli on matchday one. Three wins on the bounce since then have lifted the Reds into second place, and a draw in Amsterdam would secure their place in the knockout phase and eliminate their opponents.

Liverpool will have to make do without Luis Diaz, Joel Matip, Naby Keita, Ibrahima Konate, Arthur Melo and Diogo Jota on matchday five. Thiago Alcantara and Darwin Nunez are expected to be available after missing out at the weekend.

Ajax will be unable to call upon the services of Mohamed Ihattaren and Ahmetcan Kaplan, while Edson Alvarez and Jurrien Timber will miss the meeting with Rangers on matchday six if they pick up a yellow card against the Reds.

VPN guide

Use a VPN to watch Champions League football from outside your country

If you’re out of the country for a round of Champions League fixtures, then annoyingly your domestic on-demand services won’t work – the broadcaster knows where you are because of your IP address (boo!). You'll be blocked from watching it, which is not ideal if you’ve paid up for a subscription and still want to catch the action without resorting to illegal feeds you’ve found on Reddit.

But assistance is on hand. To get around that, all you have to do is get a Virtual Private Network (VPN), assuming it complies with your broadcaster’s T&Cs. A VPN creates a private connection between your device and t'internet, meaning the service can’t work out where you are and won't automatically block the service you've paid for. All the info going between is entirely encrypted – and that's a result.

There are plenty of good-value options out there, including:
