Mikel Arteta's men climbed back into first place of the Premier League on Sunday. Having been knocked off top spot following Manchester City's last-gasp 2-1 victory over Fulham a day earlier, the Gunners were under pressure as they made the short trip across London to Stamford Bridge.
Their margin of victory was slender - Gabriel Magalhaes scored the only goal of the game in the second half - but Arsenal turned in a mature, professional display and were worthy winners. No team in the Premier League has conceded fewer goals than the Gunners, who look more like genuine title contenders with each passing week.
The biggest doubt over Arsenal's staying power is a lack of squad depth, at least in comparison to Manchester City. It will not be easy for the Gunners to balance four different competitions, and we could see Arteta forced to sacrifice one or two if Arsenal are still going strong in the Premier League after Christmas.
Even so, the north Londoners will want to keep their momentum going when Brighton come to town on Wednesday, even though Arteta will no doubt rest some of his regular starters. Emile Smith Rowe and Takehiro Tomiyasu will definitely miss out through injury.
Brighton also head into this Carabao Cup clash on the back of a win at the weekend. The Seagulls overcame a dogged Wolves side at Molineux, with their 3-2 victory moving them back to within five points of the top four.
Roberto De Zerbi is also expected give some of his regulars the night off ahead of a meeting with Aston Villa in the league on Sunday. Jakub Moder is the only injury absentee, but the likes of Leandro Trossard, Pascal Gross, Lewis Dunk and Alexis Mac Allister could drop down to the bench at the Emirates Stadium.

VPN guide
Use a VPN to watch Carabao Cup football from outside your country
If you’re out of the country for a round of Carabao Cup action, then annoyingly your domestic on-demand services won’t work – the broadcaster knows where you are because of your IP address (boo!). You'll be blocked from watching it, which is not ideal if you’ve paid up for a subscription and still want to catch the action without resorting to illegal feeds you’ve found on Reddit.
But assistance is on hand. To get around that, all you have to do is get a Virtual Private Network (VPN), assuming it complies with your broadcaster’s T&Cs. A VPN creates a private connection between your device and t'internet, meaning the service can’t work out where you are and won't automatically block the service you've paid for. All the info going between is entirely encrypted – and that's a result.
There are plenty of good-value options out there, and FourFourTwo currently recommends:
