Tottenham will be looking to extend their winning run to four matches when they take on Aston Villa in the late kick-off on Saturday.
No Spurs supporter will be getting carried away just yet, but there are signs that Antonio Conte’s side have found the consistency that eluded them for so long.
Sunday’s 5-1 thrashing of Newcastle was one of their best performances yet under the Italian, who has now overseen five wins in his team’s last six matches. That run has lifted Tottenham above Arsenal and into fourth place; their arch-rivals have still played one fewer game, but the momentum now appears to be with Spurs.
There may still be plenty of twists and turns to come in this race, but there is no doubt that Tottenham are a much improved team. Harry Kane looks back to his best, while Dejan Kulusevski and Rodrigo Bentancur have been excellent since arriving in north London in January.
Aston Villa have ambitions of challenging for a Champions League place in the next few years, but for now they remain firmly in mid-table. Three consecutive victories had lifted Steven Gerrard’s side into the top half, but Villa have now lost three in a row to West Ham, Arsenal and Wolves. Gerrard will want to see a response from his players this weekend.
Villa will have to make do without Marvelous Nakamba and Kourtney Hause, but Danny Ings is available again after missing the loss to Wolves due to the birth of his child. Lucas Digne is back in the fold following illness.
Tottenham will be unable to call upon the services of Oliver Skipp, Japhet Tanganga and Ryan Sessegnon, while Sergio Reguilon is a doubt. If the Spaniard misses out, Matt Doherty will continue at left wing-back with Emerson Royal on the opposite flank.
