Aston Villa and Wolves will be looking for their fourth wins of the Premier League season when they meet in a West Midlands derby on Saturday.
Villa suffered a 2-1 defeat by Tottenham last time out, but impressive prior victories over Everton and Manchester United belatedly kick-started their campaign. It was always going to take a while for Villa to adapt to the loss of Jack Grealish, around whom the team had been built throughout Dean Smith’s tenure.
Emi Buendia was earmarked as a like-for-like replacement when he moved to Villa Park in the summer, even though Grealish had not actually departed at the time of his arrival. Yet the signing of Danny Ings has seen Smith instead shift to a 3-5-2 formation, with the former Southampton striker partnering Ollie Watkins up top. Smith is likely to stick with that shape for the time being, particularly as the winger Leon Bailey remains sidelined through injury.
Wolves endured a difficult start to the season, but their results have picked up of late. That should not come as a surprise to anyone who watched their early games. Bruno Lage’s side were extremely unfortunate to lose their first three matches, and things were always likely to pick up if they maintained the same level of performance.
Wolves head into this weekend’s derby having won their last two games and three of their last four. Raul Jimenez is starting to get his mojo back following a lengthy lay-off last season, while the summer signing Hwang Hee-chan has made an instant impact following his loan switch from RB Leipzig.
Lage has encouraged a more attacking approach than his predecessor Nuno Espirito Santo, and so far it seems to be working. Granted, Wolves have only scored five goals to date but their underlying numbers suggest they should have notched several more.
