The Republic of Ireland travel to Azerbaijan in search of their first win of a disastrous World Cup qualifying campaign on Saturday.
Stephen Kenny’s side have picked up just two points from their five matches so far, leaving them almost certain to miss out on Qatar 2022.
However, recent performances have shown signs of promise and they suffered heartbreak during the last international break when Cristiano Ronaldo scored two last-gasp goals to win the game 2-1 for Portugal.
Ireland followed that up with 1-1 draws against Azerbaijan and Serbia, but still sit fifth in Group A, four points behind Luxembourg, nine behind Serbia and 11 adrift of leaders Portugal.
A 4-1 friendly win over Andorra remains their only win in the last 17 games, while their last competitive victory came all the way back in June 2019, against Gibraltar.
With just three matches left to play, Kenny is unlikely to be the man to end his country’s 19-year wait to return to international football’s biggest stage this time around, but they will want to restore some pride.
Defeat in Baku against the 117th-ranked side in the world would see Ireland fall to the bottom of the table ahead of their remaining games at home to Portugal and away to Luxembourg.
