Chelsea’s bid to defend their Champions League title faces a huge test when they face Real Madrid in the first leg of their quarter-final clash on Wednesday.
Carlo Ancelotti’s side produced a spectacular comeback in the final 30 minutes of their last 16 second leg against PSG to reach this stage.
The French side led 2-0 on aggregate thanks to Kylian Mbappe goals in either leg, but Karim Benzema stunned Mauricio Pochettino’s side with a 17-minute hat-trick to turn the tie on its head.
That result will send Real to Stamford Bridge full of confidence, where they face a Chelsea team that beat Lille 4-1 on aggregate in the last round.
Thomas Tuchel’s side can count on excellent home form, having won all four of their European games in west London so far this season.
This tie is a repeat of last season’s semi-final, when Chelsea ran out 2-0 winners thanks to goals from Timo Werner and Mason Mount.
That deserved victory sent them through to the final as 3-1 aggregate victors, where they went on to beat Manchester City.
But the Blues have had an alarming build-up to this week’s tie after suffering a shock 4-1 defeat at home to Brentford in the Premier League on Saturday.
Chelsea are five points clear in third place, while Real top the La Liga standings and recovered from a humiliating 4-0 El Clasico defeat to Barcelona by beating Celta Vigo at the weekend.
Kick-off is at 8pm GMT and the game is being shown live on BT Sport 2 in the UK.
