The third-place playoff doesn't exist at the European Championship. It's not even a thing in the Champions League, the Europa League or even the FA Cup or League Cup.

It's strictly a World Cup thing – and that's perhaps because this trophy was born at a time when the Olympics was king. The bronze medal match was an Olympic tradition, so it's always been a part of the greatest show on Earth.

Uruguay, the first winners of the Jules Rimet trophy back in 1930, still have four stars on their jersey. That's because they won two World Cups and two Olympic gold medals in football. 

We don't want you to go quite so far back today. Just to 1998, when the Netherlands and Croatia fought it out for third, all the way up to four years ago, when Gareth Southgate found his Lions in that game.
