Nikola Kalinic was sent home from the Croatian squad in 2018 after the first match against Nigeria. The striker refused to come on as a substitute for manager Zlatko Dalic and paid the price.

We wonder now if Kalinic regrets that. He refused a World Cup silver medal, having played no part in his nation's incredible run to the final and he could have been a part of history.

What a journey it was, too. Croatia made it out of a group that included Argentina, Iceland and Nigeria, defeated Denmark in the round of 16 on penalties and then were taken all the way by hosts Russia, who they had to beat on spot-kicks to progress to a semi-final against England. We're just going to gloss over that semi-final, however, and mention that even though Croatia lost the final, they had a Golden Ball winner in their ranks. It was a great tournament for them.

And it all began against Nigeria on a balmy night in Kaliningrad. The Kockasti won 2-0 – but who played in that opening match against the Super Eagles?
