What a team France had in 1998. They certainly saved the best for when they were hosting the tournament.

Yet it could have all ended early for Les Bleus. Aime Jacquet's men managed three from three of their opening fixtures, sailing through the group stage with flying colours but when it came to the last-16, they had things a little more difficult.

Paraguay kept this team at bay for 90 minutes. This was back in the days of Golden Goal and 114 minutes into the match, the French finally found the breakthrough – but imagine if they hadn't.

No first title, no iconic showdown against Brazil. Just the sullen disappointment of the hosts exiting early. It doesn't bear thinking about if you're French.
