One Portuguese player became England's most wanted after this one. England's golden boy was dismissed in the Gelsenkirchen sun for a stamp, though the national newspapers back home went with a different front page.
Wayne Rooney was wound up by one of the opponents, they claimed, printing a giant photo of him winking towards his bench. It was gamesmanship to the extreme.
The English would soon get over it – not least because the Golden Generation would come to an end under Steve McLaren and the Germans would give them a more contentious moment involving the ball not crossing the line four years later – but for a while, this Portugal side was the Three Lions' most bitter rivals.
You probably remember some of the England stars from that afternoon – but what about the Portuguese? Just tell us all 14 of Big Phil Scolari's team that day.
