For a while, the Scots were in this game. Then came an unfortunate own goal, 15 minutes from time.
This was the last time that Scotland were at the World Cup, the Spice Girls were still going, Tony Blair was prime minister and Ally McCoist had just left Rangers – this was long before he was Britain's favourite co-commentator, of course.
This was back in the days when the holders would open the tournament, too. Brazil played Scotland in the first game of the tournament and though plenty would happen across France that summer – the glory of Zidane, the magic of Bergkamp and the infamy of Beckham – we still remember the Scots fondly.
Do you? Three minutes on the clock to tell us all 13 stars involved in the game that day.
