Everything great has to come to an end. Still, no one expected La Roja's dominance to peter out quite so meekly.
For four years and three whole tournaments, the Spanish were the blueprint. The combination of Barcelona's golden generation with a smattering of Real Madrid stars made for a cohesion that we've arguably never seen at international level – certainly not with this success, anyway.
But it couldn't last forever. First, the Netherlands destroyed the World Cup holders 5-1 in their opener – via a Robin van Persie diving header – before Chile delivered the sucker punch in the second match. Xavi was dropped completely, as Eduado Vargas and Charles Aranguiz scored the goals to end Spain's time a-top of the world.
It was a long time ago, now – you can probably name the XI that delivered the World Cup four years prior but how many of the 2014 crop can you name?
