Joshua Kimmich explains the benefits of the nomadic positioning he’s experienced throughout his career

Joshua Kimmich is established in both Bayern Munich's and Germany's starting line-ups as a sitting midfielder, controlling games with his expert passing and intelligence.

However, the 27-year-old hasn't always been used in that position, with his versatility allowing him to play in a number of different positions during the early part of his career and force his way into stacked sides.

Indeed, upon joining Bayern Munich from RB Leipzig in 2015, Kimmich had to find a way past a midfield full of established players, such as Thiago, Xabi Alonso, Philipp Lahm, Arturo Vidal and Thomas Muller, if he was to play in his preferred position - a difficult task to say the least.

Often playing in defence instead during his formative years at Bayern, Kimmich believes this has greatly improved his understanding of what his teammates want from him now that he is in the centre of midfield.

Speaking to FourFourTwo in the latest issue available to order, Kimmich explains how this has aided his development.

"When I first joined Bayern Munich, the midfield was pretty packed and I played as a centre-back in a back three, a right-back and even a left-back at times, as well as my more natural positions as a holding No.6 or a more attacking No.8," he explained.

"I learned what it was to defend, and what a No.8 wants and needs from those behind him to create chances for forwards. I know my team-mates’ intentions in nearly every position, which makes it much easier to help them and establish that control now I’m a regular No.6.

"You have to see the whole picture – not just what’s immediately in front of you but also what’s either side and behind. I could really do with eyes in the back of my head. The No.6 is a tough position for your head but I’ve always liked thinking and solving puzzles, in life as well as on the pitch. Thinking for the team and also myself allows the whole squad to play better."

Often the first name on the Bayern Munich and Germany teammates, Kimmich has developed into one of the best players in the world in his position. He has assumed a leadership role within both sides, too, his maturity highlighted in his performances and guidance to other players within the squads.
