Liverpool head into the Champions League semi-final first leg at Anfield on Wednesday as big favourites, but they'll need to be on their toes against a Villarreal side that has made a habit of taking down big teams.
The Reds have already gone one step further than their quarter-final exit to Real Madrid last year, and now their sights are set on a third final appearance in five years.
Jurgen Klopp’s side are aiming for the quadruple this season having already won the League Cup, set up an FA Cup final clash with Chelsea, and narrowed the gap to Premier League leaders Manchester City to one point.
Liverpool took down Benfica in the last round after a 3-1 away win in the first leg set them on course before they finished the job in unorthodox style with a 3-3 home draw at Anfield.
That came after a hard-fought 2-1 aggregate win over Inter Milan in the last 16, and the Italians remain the only side to have beaten Klopp’s side at Anfield in all competitions this season after recording a 1-0 second leg victory with 10 men.
Liverpool head into the tie on a high after three big wins in a row: 3-2 against Man City in the FA Cup semi-finals, 4-0 against Manchester United in the Premier League and a 2-0 Merseyside Derby victory against Everton on Sunday.
Villarreal face a momentous task to get past a Reds side on a roll, but they're used to upsetting the odds after taking down European giants Juventus and Bayern Munich already this season.
It has been a remarkable campaign for Unai Emery’s side, who are competing in the Champions League proper for the first time in 10 years.
They finished second in their group, behind Man United but above Atalanta and Young Boys, before stunning Juve in the last 16.
A 1-1 first leg draw in Spain gave the Italians the advantage for the second leg in Turin, but Villarreal scored three goals in the final 12 minutes to record a stunning 4-1 aggregate victory.
Things got even better when they defeated Bayern Munich 1-0 at home in the quarter-finals, and an 88th-minute equaliser from Samuel Chukwueze sealed a 1-1 draw in Germany to send them into the final four for the first time since 2006.
