Pep Guardiola's side have had plenty of glory in the Carabao Cup in recent years. City lifted the trophy four years on the bounce between 2018 and 2021, making them the second-most successful side in the history of the competition. Knocked out by West Ham in the fourth round last term, City will be looking to reclaim the prize this season.
Guardiola's team head into this match on the back of a dramatic victory over Fulham at the weekend. Joao Cancelo's red card in the first half made City's task much more difficult, but Erling Haaland converted a penalty deep into second-half stoppage time to secure all three points for the Premier League champions.
City temporarily climbed into top spot after that victory, and although Arsenal bumped them back down to second by winning on Sunday, the holders remain strong favourites to win the title this campaign too.
Arsenal's weekend win came at Stamford Bridge, as Chelsea went down 1-0 to their London rivals. It was a disappointing display from Graham Potter's side, who are still finding their feet under their new manager.
A victory at the Etihad Stadium would help to rebuild confidence, but it is clear that Chelsea need to give Potter more time to get his ideas across to the squad.
Both managers are likely to rest some of their key players ahead of Premier League fixtures this weekend, but we could see Haaland start after his substitute appearance last time out.
City will have to make do without Kyle Walker and Kalvin Phillips, while Cancelo will miss out through suspension.
Chelsea will be unable to call upon the services of N'Golo Kante, Ben Chilwell, Kepa Arrizabalaga, Reece James, Carney Chukwuemeka and Wesley Fofana.

VPN guide
Use a VPN to watch Carabao Cup football from outside your country
If you’re out of the country for a round of Carabao Cup action, then annoyingly your domestic on-demand services won’t work – the broadcaster knows where you are because of your IP address (boo!). You'll be blocked from watching it, which is not ideal if you’ve paid up for a subscription and still want to catch the action without resorting to illegal feeds you’ve found on Reddit.
But assistance is on hand. To get around that, all you have to do is get a Virtual Private Network (VPN), assuming it complies with your broadcaster’s T&Cs. A VPN creates a private connection between your device and t'internet, meaning the service can’t work out where you are and won't automatically block the service you've paid for. All the info going between is entirely encrypted – and that's a result.
There are plenty of good-value options out there, and FourFourTwo currently recommends:
