Erik ten Hag's side are on the brink of securing a top-two finish in their Europa League group. A point on Thursday would be sufficient to extend United's participation in the tournament into 2023, but given that only top spot guarantees a place in the round of 16, the Red Devils will be going all-out for victory in this one.
It looks as though things are starting to click for Ten Hag. United turned in perhaps their most complete performance of the campaign to date in a 2-0 victory over Tottenham last week. And while their finishing let them down at times in Sunday's 1-1 draw with Chelsea, United were deserving of the point they obtained through Casemiro's dramatic late goal.
United, of course, would rather be in the Champions League than the Europa League. But this competition does at least give them a better chance of winning a trophy, something the club has not done since 2017.
With just three points to their name, Sheriff Tiraspol must win at Old Trafford to keep their hopes of progression alive. In fact, given they lost 2-0 at home to United, they must at least match that margin of victory on Thursday.
Raphael Varane suffered an injury at Stamford Bridge on Saturday and will not play again for United until after the upcoming World Cup in Qatar. Harry Maguire, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Donny van de Beek, Axel Tuanzebe and Brandon Williams are all injured, but Cristiano Ronaldo could return after an in-house one-match ban.

VPN guide
Use a VPN to watch Europa League football from outside your country
If you’re out of the country for a round of Europa League fixtures, then annoyingly your domestic on-demand services won’t work – the broadcaster knows where you are because of your IP address (boo!). You'll be blocked from watching it, which is not ideal if you’ve paid up for a subscription and still want to catch the action without resorting to illegal feeds you’ve found on Reddit.
But assistance is on hand. To get around that, all you have to do is get a Virtual Private Network (VPN), assuming it complies with your broadcaster’s T&Cs. A VPN creates a private connection between your device and t'internet, meaning the service can’t work out where you are and won't automatically block the service you've paid for. All the info going between is entirely encrypted – and that's a result.
There are plenty of good-value options out there, including:
ExpressVPN including a 30-day, money-back guarantee
