Newcastle will be out to avoid an upset in the third round of the FA Cup when they host Cambridge on Saturday.
The Magpies have bigger fish to fry than the FA Cup this season. They are locked in a relegation battle and sit second-bottom of the table, having won just one match all season. Newcastle's last two games were postponed due to a combination of Covid-19 and injuries, and Eddie Howe will already be looking beyond this match to next weekend's crunch clash with Watford.
That is not to say Howe will want to lose this game. Defeat at home by a team from the third tier would be ignominious, even if Newcastle field a second-string side. An emphatic victory could help the Magpies to build some much-needed momentum for the huge task ahead of them.
Moreover, one of the biggest gripes of Newcastle fans throughout the Mike Ashley era was a perceived lack of ambition in the cup competitions. The Magpies did reach the quarter-finals two years ago, but they have been eliminated in the third or fourth round in 14 of the last 15 seasons.
After three consecutive campaigns of being knocked out in the first round, Cambridge have a chance to become one of the last 32 teams standing in this year's tournament. To do so they must beat Newcastle, something they have not managed to do since 1984.
Cambridge are currently four points clear of the League One relegation zone, having lost their last two matches - the most recent of which took place on December 18.
Newcastle will have to make do without Federico Fernandez, Callum Wilson, Isaac Hayden and Paul Dummett through injury. Allan Saint-Maximin, Karl Darlow, Ryan Fraser, Matt Ritchie, Joe Willock and Ciaran Clark could all be available again, but Javi Manquillo is suspended after picking up his fifth yellow card of the campaign last time out.
