Liverpool will go back to the top of the Premier League table - for a few hours at least - if they beat Newcastle in the early kick-off on Saturday.
The Reds have continued to keep the heat on Manchester City in recent weeks. They did not have everything their own way against Everton last time out, but Liverpool remained patient and their superior quality ultimately made the difference as they ran out 2-0 winners in the Merseyside derby to remain a point behind the champions.
There is still everything to play for the in the title race, but the fixture list certainly appears to favour City. Both teams still have to face Newcastle, but Pep Guardiola's side will host them at the Etihad Stadium. Liverpool must also play a Tottenham team fighting for a top-four finish.
Eddie Howe's side head into the weekend in the top half of the table. Newcastle spent close to £100m in the January transfer window, and that investment certainly helped their cause, but Howe has done a magnificent job of pulling the Magpies clear of the relegation zone and then into the top 10. Remarkably, Liverpool are the only team in the division that have picked up more points than Newcastle in 2022.
Liverpool will travel to Villarreal in the Champions League on Tuesday, but Jurgen Klopp cannot afford to look ahead to that game yet. He may nevertheless make one or two changes to his starting XI for this one, with Diogo Jota a contender to come into the team up top. Roberto Firmino is a doubt, though, while Curtis Jones has been struggling with illness.
Newcastle hope to have Callum Wilson and Kieran Trippier back before the end of the season, but this game will probably come too soon for both players. Isaac Hayden, Ryan Fraser and Jamal Lewis are definitely out, while Chris Wood is likely to return to the starting XI after being rested against Norwich last weekend.
