Performance of well-rested Gerrard proves that Gerrard should never be rested

Steven Gerrard led Liverpool to a vital 3-1 win over Leicester, having been omitted from the side that beat Stoke after Brendan Rodgers opted for midfielders who were not visibly flagging during the pre-match handshakes.

The 34-year old’s performance has left Rodgers with a dilemma: stick with the plan that has seen vastly improved performances and two wins on the bounce, or push his captain so hard his calves fall off?

Liverpool fan Dominic Huxley said: “Stevie [Steven] G [Gerrard] looked completely rejuvenated, which just goes to show that resting him was a terrible decision. What does his international retirement mean if not a promise that he can play every single minute of every game for his club?

“Gerrard would run over broken glass for Liverpool. So why did Rodgers put him on the bench, instead of making him do that?”

Gerrard was upbeat after the game, in marked contrast to earlier in the season, when his post-game interviews were characterised by delirious non-sequiturs, which many attributed to Rodgers’ influence, and pleas for water.

He said: “It was important to get the three points, and on a personal level it’s very satisfying to be able to move my hamstrings without bursting into tears.

“Now we can look forward to the next game, or in my case, to spending the next six days in an ice bath.”

In other Liverpool news, fans are calling on Rodgers to fix the damage caused by last summer’s massive squad overhaul by using January to overhaul the squad massively, and demanding John Henry bring in anyone who happens to be named Kenny Benitez.
