Wales’ main focus might be on Sunday’s World Cup play-off final, but first they face a clash with Poland in the opening game of their UEFA Nations League campaign.
Robert Page’s side could be forgiven for being distracted by that momentous match, against Ukraine or Scotland, but Wales at least have the chance to prepare themselves against top opposition.
Wales earned promotion to League A in the Nations League by winning their group last year, and they face Poland first up in Wroclaw.
The Poles are unbeaten in seven games in this fixture, winning five and drawing two, but they are up against a team in top form this time; Page’s men are unbeaten in nine matches and have won three of the last five.
This game kicks off an intense period of fixtures for Wales; they play Scotland or Ukraine on Sunday night in the play-off final, before facing the Netherlands on 8 June, Belgium on 11 June and the Dutch again on 14 June.
A run of five games in two weeks at the end of a long domestic season is sure to test Page’s squad, but the Nations League is a tournament worth committing to.
The four group winners in League A will make it to the Finals next year, but they will also be guaranteed a place in the play-offs for Euro 2024.
