Europe has often offered good hunting ground for Chelsea down the years – just not quite so much in recent times.
As the continent’s superclubs have got even more… well, super, the Blues have lagged behind: they haven’t made it beyond the last 16 of the Champions League since 2014, when they got to the semis, and now find themselves in Europe’s secondary competition.
The last time they competed in the Europa League didn’t go so badly, mind: Chelsea only went and won the thing in 2013 against Benfica, and on paper – the real quiz – have just as good a chance of doing it again this time around.
That victory six years ago was Chelsea’s third final in the timespan we’re quizzing you on – so sadly no nod to their 1998 Cup Winners’ Cup trophy-hoiking. Forgive us.
